Are you looking to become a successful coach or mentor? If so, it is essential to understand the key principles of coaching and mentoring. Mastering the application of these principles can help you make impossible dreams come true. The International Coaching Federation (ICF) recognizes the importance of coaching and mentoring, and offers an 83-hour program (ACSTH) approved by the ICF. This program is available in-person or online through the ITD World e-learning platform.
It covers six paradigms of situational coaching, training techniques for winners, and the secret to making impossible dreams possible. In addition to the ICF program, there are other resources available to help you become a successful coach or mentor. For example, Coaching for Breakthrough Success provides 30 principles that can be used to maximize your value to your organization, loved ones, and the world. My own experience has led me to develop eight life coaching principles that form the foundation for successful coaches.
These principles include: trust, empathy, commitment, accountability, respect, encouragement, feedback, and growth. Establishing trust between coach and client is essential for successful coaching. A coach must be able to understand their client’s feelings and perspectives, be committed to helping their client reach their goals, hold their client accountable for their actions, respect their client’s values and beliefs, provide encouragement and support to their client, provide honest feedback to their client, and help their client grow and develop. These principles are essential for successful coaching and mentoring.
If you are looking to become a successful coach or mentor, it is important to understand these principles and put them into practice. Organizations and corporations use coaching and mentoring to accelerate performance and achieve sustainable success. Coaching and mentoring allow decision makers to maximize time in a VUCA world (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous). If you think you don't have the capacity to advise on a particular topic, refer your coach to someone with more experience who can put into practice the 6 basic principles of leadership coaching even better than you.
